New "Honored Member" of AAMS

Lindita Çoku

With a GREAT pleasure, I would like to announce the acceptance of invitation by the Board of Directors to Dr. Anna Kohen to become honored member of Albanian American Medical Society. As per bylaws of our society, Dr. Kohen fulfills and exceeds its requirements. A brief summary of Dr. Kohen is included below followed by my comment.

Who is Dr. Anna Kohen?

Dr. Anna Kohen, D.D.S., is current president of Albanian American Women Organization (AAWO)"Motrat Qiriazi". She was born in Vlora, Albania after World War II. She left Albania in 1966 with her seven family members and went to Greece. Dr.Kohen completed her dentistry studies in Greece at the Ethnikon and Kapodistriakon University of Athens, Dental School in 1970. After completing her education she moved to the United States where she continued her studies at New York University?s Dental School and received a DDS Dental Degree in 1976. After graduation she was appointed as an Assistant Clinical Professor of Restorative Dentistry at NYU Dental School and taught there for ten years. She has been practicing general dentistry since that time…
In 1990, with the help of several Jewish organizations, she brought 37 of her Jewish-Albanian relatives (a total of ten families) to the U.S., and assisted them in the process of integration. In 1991, she was invited to Albania to celebrate the formation of the Albanian-Israeli Society where she has been elected an Honorary Member. In 2004,"The President of the Albanian Republic, Alfred Moisiu recognized Dr. Anna Kohen during a meeting at the Presidency with the medal "For Special Civil Merits" under the motivation "For valuable contribution helping the Albanians during the Kosovar humanitarian crisis; for precious aid given to the new Albanian emigrants in the United States of America." In July 2006, Dr. Kohen was honored by the Major of Vlora with the title “Honored Citizen of Vlora” and the same day, was the celebration of renaming of the street where most of the jews lived, to the “Jewish Street”.

Dr. Kohen frequently visits the Albanian schools in the Bronx, teaching children how to take care of their teeth and maintain good oral hygiene. She has participated in countless community events and contributed moral, emotional and financial support to members of the Albanian community. She is consistently there for people in need, which is why for the past eleven years Albanian women have honored her by electing her as the President of AAWO Motrat Qiriazi, the most active organization in the Albanian community. Dr. Kohen is married to a Holocaust survivor from Poland and has two children.

My comment from the first meeting with Dr. Kohen:

Last month, Dr. Anna Kohen invited me to participate in the AAWO's celebration party of international women's day in NY on March 8, 2009. Unfortunately due to my call schedule I could not make arrangements to
attend it, but fortunatly I did meet her for the first time in person on February 28, 2009 at the Albanian American Professionals and Entrepreneurs Network (APEN) first annual Career Day 2009 hosted in NYC. APEN promotes networking opportunities for Albanians and Albanian-Americans and I was invited as one of the panelists of the platform. The goal of this event was to provide a venue for professionals, recruiters, and students to exchange information regarding careers paths and job opportunities. This year's theme was entitled "Overcoming Career Obstacles:The Power of Networking." During the reception I had an opportunity to meet and talk to Dr. Kohen and her family. Dr. Kohen attends and supports all activities organized from Albanian American Organizations and embraces the mission of AAMS. Dr. Kohen clicked in my heart as a great human, then as a caring woman, mother and as a succesful solo runner of a dentistry practise in a city like NY. Our conversation was mutually honest and after that day was followed with the exchange of few emails and a telephone call between us about the invitation. I am thrilled in having Dr. Kohen to honor our newly formed organization. We need the great reputation, the support and the mentoring of members of Dr. Anna Kohen's caliber. Thank you and Welcome!
